Getting There And Away in Delhi

Being the capital city of the country, Delhi can be expected to have every facility to take you to the nook and corners of India. With a good network of roadways, highways, railway links and airports, it has become the starting point for most of the travelers visiting India. In winter months of December and January, flight delays can be expected due to fog, but waiting facilities and arrangements are good at the airports here.

Air: Indira Gandhi Airport's Domestic Terminal (Terminal 1) is at a close distance of around 8 km from the International Terminal (Terminal 2). The domestic airport is situated in southwestern part of Delhi, about 15 km from Cannaught Place. One can easily commute between the two terminals using free shuttle bus service available here.

The arrival hall of the International terminal has vital facilities like 24 hour money exchange, pre-paid taxi reservation counters, information counters, cafes, etc. You must adhere to the security mandates like baggage checks and ensure that your check in luggage has been sealed and tagged before it leaves the counter.

There are about 35 international flights that land in Delhi from across the world. These include Lufthansa Airlines, British Airways, Emirates, Air France, Qantas Airways, Malaysian Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways and Air Canada. Indian airlines operating from the International airport too include Indian, Spice Jet, IndiGo and Kingfisher. Most of the airline offices are situated in Cannaught Place like that of Jet Airways, Air Deccan,etc. Many of the International airlines offices, like Air France, Gulf Air, British Airways, etc are situated here as well.

Train: At the International Tourist Bureau, located in New Delhi Railway Station, travelers can easily book train tickets for domestic traveling. There is also a booking counter at Indira Gandhi Airport. You may be asked to show your passport at these reservation offices, to check authenticity. Payment can be made in Dollors, Euro, Pound Sterling or INR backed with money-exchange certificates.

The major rail heads of Delhi are New Delhi Railway Station, near Cannaught Place and Nizammudin Railway Station near Sunder Nagar. Other railheads are Old Delhi Railway Station and Sarai Rohilla Railway Station. Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Taj Express are some of the best trains of India, providing best quality service, food and luxury.

Bus: From Interstate Bus Terminal in Kashmiri Gate, buses ply to other states of the region. There are facilities available for waiting and storing luggage. One can easily reserve their bus travel from Rajasthan Roadways or Uttar Pradesh Roadways counters available here. Even Bikaner House, near India Gate, operates comfortable interstate AC coaches for Jaipur.
