About the Red Fort Delhi
The Red Fort, Delhi is perhaps one of the most brilliantly made specimens of Mughal architecture. The fort displays the creative and artistic genius of the the then artisans and the craftsmen to the fullest. Built by three of the Mughals Emperors - Akbar, Jehangir and Shahjehan, the Red fort Delhi is one of the must see tourist destinations in India. It took several decades to build this vast & extraordinary monument of galore.
It was Sultan Sikander Lodi, who first started to construct a fort here, named the fort Badalgarh. But Akbar, the Mughal Emperor replaced the fort with this high red sandstone ramparts, which give the fort its name - the Red Fort. The construction of the Red Fort Delhi was completed by Shahjehan in 1648. The walls surrounding the fort extend for more than two kilometers and vary in height between 18 meters and 33 meters. Shahjehan built this fort, as he wanted to shift his capital from Agra to Delhi. But, before he could do this, he was captured and imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb in the fort itself, where he stayed until his last breath.

One can go into the Red Fort by the Delhi Gate to the west, which pierces the outer wall. After this, one goes through the Hathi Pol or Elephant Gate, which is an ornamented entrance that pierces the inner wall. The inner complex houses the Diwan-e-am and the Diwan-e-khas. The Rang Mahal is a water-cooled apartment for the royal ladies. There is market in the basement of the fort, where one can find traditional Indian goods. The Khas Mahal and Sheesh Mahal are exquisitely ornamented halls, which portray the brilliance of Mughal royalty. There is also another entrance to the Red Fort Delhi, which is the Lahori Gate, facing Lahore. This entrance leads to the well-known Chandni Chowk Market. A special light and sound show is organized here for tourists in the evening which is a must see occasion.
