Jaipur is the capital city of Rajasthan, located in
north-western India. The merciful Aravalli Hills separate the city from the
dry Thar deserts. It lies at a distance of 258 km from Delhi, 232 km from
Agra and 405 km from Udaipur. The main airport of the state is in Jaipur, 11
km from the city centre. It is called Sanganer Airport. The central railway
station, called Jaipur Junction, is located in Bani Park area.
The old city of Jaipur is encircled by a ruined fortification wall. This
part of the capital is known as the 'Pink City' for the color of its
buildings. It is here that most of the heritage monuments are situated like
Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar and Jama Masjid. The City Palace is situated in
the heart of the city and covers one-seventh of the area within its complex.
The massive gateways located in this area, that stand as important landmarks
today are Chand Pol, Ajmer Gate and Sanganeri Gate.
