A
tiny desert town, lying 153 km from Jaisalmer, is a reminiscent of the
glorious past of Thar. It was founded by Bahada Rao in the 13th century. If
you go past the slow paced camels, the harsh weather and the dusty terrains,
you will discover a vibrant and alive township with warm hearted and humble
natives. Barmer is known for its folk art, rich tradition and colorful
festivals. If you are a shopaholic then its a not-to-be-missed destination,
with a wide range of block printed textiles, embroidered carpets, potteries
and intricate wood work that is available in the local markets here,
especially in its Sadar Bazaar.
Apart from the handicrafts and artwork, the barren lands of Barmer,
formerly known as 'Bahadamer', also has memories of its past, well preserved
in its fort ruins and temples. Barmer Fort is a dilapidated structure
situated right atop the hill where Barmer is situated. To its west lie a
series of Jain temples that bear inscription dated 1295 AD. These temples
showcase brilliant paintings, mirrorwork and carved sculptures. Chintamani
Parswanath Jain Temple needs a special mention here.
Due to the harsh topography of the region, the locals have practiced and
perfected excellent artistic skills to make a living, which has now become
Barmer's specialty. During your tour here, you must experience the magic of
soulful folk music here. There are many priest singers who sing heart
warming songs in the honor of the Lord, mostly during the festivals.
