An
unexplored territory of Rajasthan, Dholpur should attract your attention
because of its best quality red sandstone which was very much in demand
during the Mughal reigns, when the red sandstone architectures were
springing up in Delhi and Agra. Located on the route of Gwalior to Agra,
Dholpur was earlier known as Dhawalpuri after Dhawal Deo, the founder of the
city.
The geographical location of the town made it a centre point of attraction
for many rulers, because of which it saw lots of harm and destruction of its
property. It was here that Shah Jahan's eldest son Dara Shikoh and Aurangzeb
fought a bloody battle and history repeated when the next generation that is
Aurangzeb's sons fought among themselves to decide who will succeed to the
throne, when the dynasty was already touching the turf.
