Nagaur
is situated at a distance of 135 km from Jodhpur. The city is famous all
over the country for its colorful Nagaur Fair, which is the second largest
cattle fair of India after the Pushkar Cattle Fair. The festival takes place
during Jan-Feb and attracts crowds of locals as well as tourists.
Apart from the festival, the town is also proud of its historic fort, which
is located in the heart of the city. The 12 century Achichatragarh Fort has
three gigantic gateways called the Sireh Pol, Beech ka Pol and Kacheri Pol.
There are several beautiful palaces housed within the fort, that highlight
the royal grandeur. The prominent ones are Amar Singh Mahal, Akbari Mahal,
Hadi Rani Mahal and Bhakt Singh Mahal. The fort also has a scientifically
constructed water system that recycles every drop of water.
There is also Tarkeen Dargarh, built by Mughal emperor Akbar for a disciple
of Sufi saint Khwaja Muin-ud-din Chishti. A group of Jain temples can also
be seen here, which have beautiful motifs showcasing the lives of Jain
tirthankars.
Sleeping:
If your visit is scheduled the famous Nagaur fair, then you will need prior
bookings in the hotels and guest houses present in the area. Some good
option are Hotel Mahaveer International at Vijay Vallabh Chowk, Hotel Sujan
at Nakash Gate and Hotel Bhaskar at Station Road. RTDC also opens a hotel
during the festival season.
Getting There & Away:
Express buses are available from Nagaur to Bikaner and Jodhpur. It will
take 2 ½ hours to reach Bikaner while 3 hours to reach Jodhpur.
